“I thought I'll never find a chocolate powder shake that not only helps with my period and bloating but can satisfy my chocolate cravings!”

- Ashley H.

When You Have Your Periods, Do You:

  • Feel weary, exhausted, and cannot function at your best?

  • Feel stressed, moody, or even depressed?

  • Feel agonizing cramps that leave you bedridden all day?

  • Feel pains in your chest?

  • Feel you want to gobble an entire cake and other food cravings?

Girl! I feel you! As a woman, these are the things we have to deal with every month.

Personally, these symptoms were a nightmare when Aunty Flo paid me a visit. Those painful cramps render me helpless and unfocused on my work and studies. The pain was so unbearable I ended up crying because of it.

Now while traditional painkillers helped provide relief for my nasty cramps…

…I don’t want to rely on them as they contain harmful chemicals that might compromise my health in the long run.

This inspired me to look for “natural remedies” that could help provide relief during my period without sacrificing my long-term health. And so, after years of looking for them, I’m glad I could share them with you in this letter.

They are all inside this one tasty chocolate drink.

Before I share them with you in greater detail, I’d like to share with you how we actually get these period symptoms in the first place. This will give you a better understanding of how our body works during our period and how these remedies can help.

Fluctuating Hormones MAY Be The Reason for These Period Symptoms to Show Up

Scientific studies show that these period-related issues might stem from hormonal fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone levels. (1,2)

The sudden increase and drop in these hormone levels may be the prime suspect to a terrible period experience.

But how do these fluctuations happen in the first place?

Let’s start with how periods work to better understand how these hormones fluctuate and other factors that contribute to these period symptoms.

You see, our menstrual cycle has 4 phases that continue to cycle every month. (3)

The cycle continues until we reach menopause at around the age of 45 - 55—in which we stop menstruating after the last stage of menopause.

Two of these phases are where we experience these period symptoms.

Let’s dive in on what these phases are.

Menstrual Phase

(Occurs at Day 1 - 5 on Average)

This is the phase where you actually get your periods. Here, you release a combination of blood, mucus, and tissues from the uterus during this phase.

The menstrual phase happens if the egg from the previous cycle isn’t fertilized. And if pregnancy doesn’t occur, progesterone and estrogen levels drop.

Once this happens, your uterus contracts, and the lining is shed and expelled out the body since it is no longer needed. (4)

In case you don’t know, the purpose of this uterine lining is to provide sustenance and nourishment to the embryo, making this a crucial component in pregnancy.

This uterine contraction is what causes your menstrual cramps. Hormone-like lipids called prostaglandins are involved with inflammation (4). Higher levels of prostaglandins lead to more painful menstrual cramps.

“But what’s the role of prostaglandins during my period?”

Whenever there’s any damage or infection in your body, the prostaglandins keep these under control, which causes pain as a part of your body's healing process.

You see, when the uterine lining gets shed, your body releases large amounts of prostaglandins that contract your uterine muscles and constrict blood vessels. This is where you get your menstrual cramps. (4)

Not only will you experience cramps, but you may also experience the following symptoms during the menstrual phase (5):

  • Fatigue

  • Bloating

  • Mood Swings

  • Lower Back Pain

  • Breast Tenderness

Follicular Phase

(Occurs at Day 1 - 13 on Average)

In this phase, your ovaries produce new eggs to prepare for the next ovulation.

It starts when the pituitary gland in your brain releases follicle-stimulating hormones (FSH).

These hormones stimulate the ovaries to produce follicles that contain an immature egg (6).

Now, most of the time, only one egg will mature. And when the follicle is in the process of maturity, it sends off a surge of estrogen. This creates the lining in your uterus for the embryo to grow. (Remember? This is the same lining that gets shed during the menstrual phase if the woman doesn’t get pregnant.)

Ovulation Phase

(Occurs at Day 14 on Average)

When the estrogen rises during the follicular phase, your pituitary gland releases the luteinizing hormone (LH).

Its purpose is to release the mature egg from the ovary, which we call the “ovulation” process. (7)

The mature egg then travels down to the fallopian tube and then to the uterus for the sperm to fertilize it.

Since the egg is matured at this stage, the pituitary gland stops making FSH and shifts toward making more LH.

And here’s a fact. This is the phase where a woman can get pregnant. Another thing is that it is also possible to get pregnant 5 days before ovulation.

Now, this phase lasts for 24 hours only. If the egg isn’t fertilized after a day, the mature egg dies.

Luteal Phase

(Occurs at Day 15 - 28 on Average)

When the follicle releases the mature egg, it becomes the corpus luteum. It starts to form as soon as the mature egg is released. (8)

Now, the purpose of the corpus luteum is to produce progesterone. It keeps the uterine lining thick and ready for the implantation of the fertilized egg.

If you get pregnant, the body produces Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) that maintains the thickness of the uterine lining.

However, if you don’t get pregnant, the corpus luteum dies, the progesterone and estrogen levels go down, and the uterine lining sheds. This starts the next menstrual cycle right in the menstrual phase.

So when that happens, you may start experiencing PMS symptoms during the luteal phase like:

  • Bloating

  • Food Cravings

  • Mood Changes

  • Acne Breakouts

  • Breast Tenderness

  • Trouble in Sleeping

Now that you know the basic understanding of how and when these periods and PMS symptoms occur, which is in both the luteal and menstrual phases.

You’re now aware of why we all feel moody, irritable, and have intense food cravings right before our menstrual phase. (8)

And when we’re in our menstrual phase, we start experiencing those debilitating cramps that leave us bedridden all day and turn our week for the worst. (5)

But here’s good news.

With new discoveries and the latest scientific research, combating these annoying symptoms can help us regain our freedom and “fun times” during that time of the month.

That’s why I teamed up with brilliant food scientists to develop a chocolate drink that could help combat these symptoms and make our menstrual and luteal phases more tolerable.

#1. Chaste Berry: The Famous Mediterranean Herb Used to Control PMS Symptoms

The Chaste Berry (AKA. Vitex Agnus-Castus) is a popular herb used in the middle ages in the Mediterranean regions. (9)

Chaste berries are used as supplements to help reduce the effects of PMS during the luteal phase, as this recent study shows. (10, 11)

A clinical trial was conducted among 178 women. One group was given dry chaste berry extract tablets, and the other was given a placebo. The results were surprising as the chaste berry group improved their PMS symptoms. (12) Remember earlier that hormonal fluctuations may be the cause of these period symptoms?

That said, red raspberry leaves contain a plant compound called “Fragarine.”

Research shows that this plant compound helps tone and tighten pelvic muscles in the pelvic region.*

Doing this may help reduce these painful cramps caused by muscle contractions during the menstrual phase. (17)

In addition to that, red raspberry leaves are rich in iron (16). Supplementing enough iron to the body may combat the effects of lightheadedness, fatigue, and coldness of hands and feet due to blood loss during the menstrual phase. (18, 19)

This is necessary for women with heavier cycles.

On top of that, red raspberry leaves are also rich in antioxidants (20). These can help protect your cells from free radicals, known as oxidative stress. (21, 22)

With these 2 ingredients together, they are already powerful to combat these period symptoms.

But we’re just warming up. We’re throwing in the next ingredient to help energize you during the menstrual and luteal phases.*

#2. Red Raspberry Leaf: Known as the Woman’s Health Herb Cherished By The Olympian Gods of Mount Ida

While red raspberries can be sweet, tasty, and nutritious fruits. Their leaves are also loaded with nutrients often used for herbal teas. (14, 15)

They are often called “the woman’s herb.”

But why is that?

You see, red raspberry leaves have been used to alleviate various health issues, provide relief during periods, and induce labor during pregnancy for centuries. (16)

No wonder it’s popular among women.

#3. Ginseng: Regarded as the “Panacea” Revered by the Ancient Chinese People

In Asian countries like China, Japan, and Korea, ginseng has been used in cuisines and traditional medicines for centuries. (23)

Thousands of years ago, ancient Chinese Emperors used this exclusively. They were willing to pay a hefty price to get this.

Yes, it is that valuable.

And the reasons will surprise you.

You see, studies have shown that ginseng extracts could reduce inflammation and cell damage from free radicals. (24, 25)

A study showed 12 males that supplementing ginseng extract lessens exercise-induced muscle damage and decreases inflammation. (26)

A study showed 12 males that supplementing ginseng extract lessens exercise-induced muscle damage and decreases inflammation. (26)

Just like red raspberry leaves, ginseng is also rich in antioxidants. (27)

An experiment was conducted on postmenopausal women where they were given 3g of ginseng versus a placebo daily for 12 weeks. Results show that supplementing antioxidants may help combat oxidative stress. (28)

What’s more, ginseng may also provide an energy boost. (29)

Various animal studies have been conducted that ginseng extract may help reduce fatigue. (30) When they tested this hypothesis on humans, they showed promising results. One research showed 10 different studies that supplementing ginseng could help fight extreme tiredness. (31)

To top it all off, a review of 155 studies found that ginseng may enhance the physical performance of individuals. (32) Wow! No wonder ancient Chinese people admire this herb.

And that’s not all!

This priced herb from ancient times may also improve the brain’s cognitive function, like mood, behavior, and memory. (33)

A study conducted among 6,422 Korean elders found that ginseng usage for 5 years resulted in better cognitive function. (34) Moreover, another small study shows that ginseng may also help improve mood, thus reducing stress. (35)

As a cherry on top, ginseng may also improve the immune system.

A study was conducted among 100 adults where they were given 2g of ginseng tablets and a placebo for 8 weeks. The results show a significant increase in immune cells. (36)

If a ginseng wasn’t enough to help support your overall health, we’re also adding another superfood to help ease other PMS symptoms for a better cycle experience.*

#4. Ginger: A Very Expensive and Sought-After Spice in the 13th Century

In Southeast Asian countries, gingers are one of the healthiest spices on the planet. (37)

In ancient times, Indian and Chinese people produced ginger tonic root as a medicinal herb and flavoring agent. It was so popular that ginger was exported to the Roman Empire over 2000 years ago and continued to be a priced commodity in Europe.

The value of ginger is mind-blowing. In the 13th century, a pound of ginger was equivalent to the cost of one sheep!

So, what makes ginger so special? You see, gingers contain a phytochemical compound called “gingerol.” It is responsible for its medicinal properties. (38)

According to research, ginger contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, like ginseng, which help fight free radicals and may relieve menstrual cramps. (39)

Now, what makes ginger different from ginseng is that it may help with different types of nausea, according to multiple studies. (40, 41, 42)

Ginger also shows that it may provide stomach relief from bloating. (43) It may seem like a lot of health benefits from a well-known spice, but that’s not all. Multiple studies indicated that ginger may provide relief from menstrual pains. (44, 45, 46) In a 2009 study, research was conducted on 150 women. These women were divided into 3 groups.

One group was given 250 mg of ginger powder, while others were given 2 different traditional painkillers. Results showed that both have similar effects on providing menstrual relief. (47)

And as icing on the cake, we’re also throwing in 2 crucial nutrients your body needs to survive the shark week. While technically not a superfood, these nutrient duo can also help with your PMS that most people aren’t aware of.*

#5 and #6. Calcium and Vitamin D3: An Underrated Nutrient Duo that Helps with PMS Symptoms

Now, we’re all familiar that calcium supplementation can help strengthen our bones and muscles. (48)

Combining that with Vitamin D3 can help the body absorb calcium, thus giving you more benefits of this nutrient. (49)

But did you know that supplementing calcium may help reduce the effects of PMS during the luteal phase? (50, 51, 52)

An experiment was conducted among 497 women with recurring PMS symptoms. One group was given 1200mg of calcium daily, and the other was given a placebo.

An experiment was conducted among 497 women with recurring PMS symptoms. One group was given 1200mg of calcium daily, and the other was given a placebo.

After 3 menstrual cycles, the calcium-supplemented group shows reduced PMS effects like water retention, food cravings, and cramps during the luteal phase. (53)

In addition to that, another study concluded that women with PMS tend to have lower calcium and magnesium levels in the body. (54) So if we want to experience hassle-free periods, calcium and vitamin D3 supplementation should be a part of our diet.

Now, let’s move on to the other nutrient—Vitamin D3.

As I stated earlier, vitamin D3 can help the body absorb calcium. The vitamin D3 and calcium work hand in hand to help support your overall health. (49)

Another benefit of taking vitamin D3 is that it helps regulate mood. A study of 7,534 people showed an improvement in their mood after vitamin D supplementation. (55, 56)

To top it all off, vitamin D supports bone health and the immune system. (57)
